Vermont teens smoke, drink less

High school tobacco use and drinking declined between 2009 and 2011, but it’s still easy for Vermont teens to get booze when they want it. Those are among the results of the 2011 Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which was released Wednesday during a news conference at the Statehouse.

Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Harry Chen and Vermont Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca said they were heartened by the decline in drinking and by a drop in cigarette smoking, which they attributed to broad community prevention work and teens making the right choices.

Teen Council Offers Compromise to Smoking Ban

The Gulfport City Council voted 5-0 to ban smoking at the city beach and other outdoor public areas. But there were questions, concerns and ideas expressed before the final vote.

For nearly an hour, people of all ages addressed the council about the proposed smoking ban.

Gulfport Teen Council President Nolan Sloan was first to speak during public session. Sloan spoke on behalf of the Teen Council.

Shops fined for selling tobacco products near schools

As many as 20 shops from around five educational institutions in the city were fined after they were found selling tobacco products in raids conducted on Thursday.

The raids were conducted by the district health department in association with the Narcotics Cell of the police under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003 (COTPA). Ream more »

Pioneering research conducted in Geneva shows that electronic cigarettes often contain as much nicotine as real cigarettes, and twice as much as other replacement therapies such as nicotine patches.

The results of the study, conducted by researchers from the universities of Geneva and Auckland, have been published in the November issue of the European Respiratory Journal.

The report shows that electronic cigarette users and regular smokers have similar levels of cotinine, a product of the degradation of nicotine by the liver.

Costa Mesa moves ahead with smoking ban in parks

COSTA MESA Smoking in Costa Mesa parks may be extinguished under an ordinance introduced by the City Council.
The Council voted 4 to 1 Tuesday night to move forward with a ban on smoking cigarettes in public parks, which would apply to the city’s three athletic fields, two community gardens and within 50 feet of all 29 public parks.
The ban will not extend to chewing tobacco, as requested by Councilman Steve Mensinger. Councilwoman Wendy Leece opposed the ordinance. Ream more »
