Philip Morris International has tried to force the University of Stirling to hand over secret data into teenage smoking and cigarette packaging gathered over more than a decade.
The manufacturers behind the popular Marlboro brand, have used Freedom of Information laws to gain access about 6000 confidential interviews undertaken with teenagers as young as 13, which discuss their views on smoking and tobacco. Ream more »

Indiana survey shows rise in teen marijuana, alcohol use

Alcohol is going out of style — at least for some Indiana high school students.

Statistics released Wednesday from the 21st Annual Survey of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use reveal that alcohol use by the state’s youth is on the decline, but use of marijuana and smokeless tobacco is on the rise. The study, conducted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at IU-Bloomington, found that the reported use of marijuana for seventh grade, as well as grades nine through 12, has increased.

Demi Lovato was spotted with cigarettes in the front pocket of her handbag! While it certainly isn’t the end of the world, many people are questioning her role model status. Sure, her positive outlook on life is very uplifting, but cigarettes? Doesn’t bode well for her.

Vashon retailers cited for tobacco sales to minors

Three Vashon Island retailers have been cited for illegally selling tobacco to minors, a major reversal from an island-wide clean record between 2005 and 2009, disappointed public-health officials say.

King County’s overall retailer compliance rate has also dropped — from 96 percent in 2009 to less than 89 percent in the 999 inspections done so far this year.
