The newest phase of the anti-smoking policy at MU is turning out to be completely and utterly useless. The designated smoking areas are so unrealistic smokers are disregarding the rules and the self-enforcement tactics aren’t working.
As of July, the second phase kicked in, making parking lots and garages the only places on campus to smoke.

The Hermosa Beach City Council has decided to move forward with drafting an ordinance that would ban smoking in most public spaces, including Pier Plaza, public parking lots, the Strand, Greenbelt and other city parks.
The council in a meeting Tuesday night voted 4-1 to direct city staffers to draft the law, which will be presented at a council meeting on Oct. 25.

Acting on a tip from a landowner, law enforcement officers found about 3,000 marijuana plants in rural Butler County on Tuesday.
The marijuana was found near Northwest 180th and Indianola Road, Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet said in a prepared statement.
The operation was “very well hidden in a wooded area,” Herzet said. It is a few miles south of a similar marijuana grow discovered in Marion County on Monday. Ream more »
A judge will hear arguments Friday from tobacco lawyers seeking to move a trial from Lee County, saying publicity generated from stories published in The News-Press has made it impossible for them to get a fair trial.
The stories, which ran in print Sunday and on news-press.com Tuesday, reported on the first of a series of about 150 lawsuits against tobacco companies.

A smoking ban around recreational fields split the council at the Sept. 21 meeting. Councilwoman Elaine Vuoncino said the proposed ordinance was too restrictive on the rights of residents.
“I’m a non-smoker,” Vuoncino said. “I hate smoke. I just feel it’s a huge infringement on the rights of people.”
Under the proposed ordinance, the borough will prohibit the smoking of cigars, cigarettes, pipes, electronic cigarettes and other similar devices on various municipal sites with “smoke-free zone” signs with a likely penalty not to exceed $50 per the judge’s discretion. Ream more »
An inexpensive drug widely used in Central and Eastern Europe, but not approved in the United States, more than tripled smokers’ chances of successfully kicking the habit in a new study published in the latest New England Journal of Medicine.
The drug, Tabex (cytisine), has been used for smoking cessation in Russia and other Eastern European countries for more than four decades, but no rigorous studies have ever been done to prove its effectiveness.

Smoking takes a heavy toll on Florida, killing more than 28,000 state residents a year. Billions of dollars are spent annually to treat sick smokers, including at least $1 billion by the state’s taxpayer-fundedMedicaid program.
Alarming statistics like these have led us to support anti-smoking initiatives. But in taking on tobacco, which remains a legal product, it’s still possible to overreach.
The Orlando City Council did so this month by passing a resolution urging smokers not to light up in parks and other public places outdoors “where children commonly play.” More significantly, the measure called on the Legislature to give local governments like Orlando’s the power to go beyond suggestions and actually ban smoking in parks and other public areas. One man is dead and five others are under arrest following a Tuesday night shootout at the site of a commercial marijuana growing operation in rural Amador County.
The Amador County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday from a resident on Carbondale Road who reported hearing several gunshots. At 9:18, a second caller reported hearing 15 to 20 gunshots. One of the callers reported seeing a white full-sized extra cab truck and dark-colored sport utility vehicle leaving the property where the gunshots originated.
