The Long Branch Council has adopted an ordinance that will eliminate smoking from all areas of the city’s beaches.

Quitting smoking is a battle that you can overcome

smoking cessation program
Stop smoking in one visit? So Anderson hypnotherapist Marge Perry of Inspire Hypnosis told me when I spoke with her a few weeks back on my radio show about her smoking cessation program. I was surprised it could take just one visit to kick such an addictive habit.

There’s one big catch, however.
You have to really want to stop. It can’t be somebody else’s idea. It must truly be something you’re ready to do. If so, hypnosis can make it easier.

hookah shops
After some heated debate, the Oregon House agreed to send legislation limiting the growth of hookah lounges on to the governor.

House Bill 2726 cleared its final legislative but not without complaints about changes added in the Senate.

Much of the discussion centered on two amendments: The first rewrites the state’s 2007 Indoor Clean Air Act to allow a handful of cigar shops that share walls with other buildings to continue operating. Ream more »

Will New Packaging Stop Big Tobacco?

June 30th, 2011 Posted in Tobacco industry Tags:

Big Tobacco profits
Graphic anti-smoking labels are coming to a tobacco retailer near you. But will it matter to tobacco companies’ profits?

The FDA is requiring that cigarettes sold in the U.S. feature pictorial warning labels on the top 50% of the front and back of the package. Similar warning labels must comprise at least 20% of advertisements. Domestic tobacco players such as Altria (NYSE: MO ) , Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI ) , Lorillard (NYSE: LO ) , and Vector Group (NYSE: VGR ) have until the autumn of 2012 to comply.

Smoking in public ban
Once the Ministry of Health passes the anti-tobacco law, which is under preparation, smoking in the public places is very likely to be banned throughout the country.
“This will include all the shisha cafes where indoors smoking is highly unhealthy,” said Nouf Khamis, health educator at the ministry.

In the meantime, MOH is launching a two-month tobacco awareness campaign starting from September, targeting school children in the age group of 10 to 18 years.

Supreme Court Rejects Challenge To Lousiana Tobacco Verdict

June 29th, 2011 Posted in Tobacco companies Tags:

Tobacco Verdict
The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear the appeal of a $270 million verdict in Louisiana against Philip Morris and other big cigarette companies, dashing their hopes that the court’s animosity toward big class actions displayed in Wal-Mart vs. Dukes may extend to tobacco lawsuits.

Justice Antonion Scalia exercised the rarely-used prerogative of a SCOTUS judge last September to stay enforcement of the verdict, saying at the time “I think it reasonably probable that four Justices will vote to grant certiorari, and significantly possible that the judgment below will be reversed.” He was wrong.

Stop selling tobacco letter

selling tobacco

I have been a smoker for 40 years. I don’t want to be, but I am. Still. I have tried to quit more times than I’d like to admit. I have come to the realization that I probably won’t until cigarettes are not available in almost every store on almost every street corner. They’re just too available.

I see that public health officials and some local governments, in all their wisdom, may consider banning the new electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) used by adults in public places. The reason? Ream more »

Voluntary counseling helps teens quit smoking pot

quit smoking pot
A school counselor might be more likely to get your teen to stop smoking pot than you.
A new University of Washington study, published in the online journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, investigated a “non-finger wagging” approach to help teens who smoke marijuana regularly to quit.

“We just felt like there needed to be some option for kids who wanted to figure out how to reduce their use,” said Denise Walker, co-director on the University of Washington’s Innovative Programs Research Group.

‘Predatory Marketing’ of Menthol Cigarettes

June 29th, 2011 Posted in Cigarettes flavors Tags:

Menthol Cigarettes market
Critics of the tobacco industry long have accused cigarette makers of trying to hook black youths on smoking by marketing menthol brands intensively in African-American neighborhoods. And now a study led by Stanford University medical researchers backs up that contention.

The researchers focused on how Newport cigarettes, the leading menthol brand, have been marketed by Lorillard Inc. at 407 stores within walking distance of 91 California high schools.
