The medical marijuana dispensary legislation that was debated in the Vermont Senate last week would be a step toward reasonable regulation of this drug, but a baby step at that.

The nation’s top cigarette companies say they have made their payments as part of the 25-year settlement in which some cigarette makers are paying states about $206 billion for smoking-related health care costs.

Philip Morris USA, the nation’s largest cigarette maker, said Friday that it made its annual payment of about $3.5 billion as part of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. It is owned by Richmond-based Altria Group Inc.

Make a law to ban public smoking

I am writing to ask my elected officials to support a state-wide smoke-free workplace law for Alabama.

I have been around second-hand smoke for a long time. Several people in my extended family smoke, and any time we have a family get-together, they sit on the front porch and smoke. Even when I am outside on the porch with them, the smoke really gets to me. Ream more »

Hartsville City Council gave preliminary approval to an ordinance that makes city parks tobacco free.

The measure, which council approved unanimously on first reading Tuesday, bans smoking as well as the use of other tobacco products in all of the city’s public parks and other outdoor facilities owned by the city. The ordinance also provides for a $25 fine for violations.
