Debate swirls about smoke-free campus

The decision of whether to make Elon University a smoke-free campus by this fall has not yet been made, according to Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of Student Life.

Despite a recent rumor that campus would be smoke-free this March, Jackson said the earliest Elon would become smoke-free would be fall 2011.

For some people, having clean air to breathe is a necessity and a health issue that isn’t taken lightly.
One such person is Marshall McFarland, a University senior art major who said he is susceptible to asthma attacks when he is exposed to environmental pollutants, such as second-hand cigarette smoke.

Lawmakers hear testimony on food, drinks containing medical marijuana

Law enforcement officers urged state lawmakers Tuesday to ban or restrict the sale of medical-marijuana food and drink products, while cannabis advocates pleaded to keep them legal. The officers said the products, which include pot-infused brownies, candies and chocolate bars, are appealing to children and are showing up at schools.
“These aren’t trivial incidents,” Jim Gerhardt, a member of the North Metro Drug Task Force, told lawmakers. “A number of children have been hospitalized because of consuming these products.” Ream more »

Reynolds Tobacco sued the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services, claiming the federal agencies stacked the FDA’s Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee with “a clique” who have “severe financial and appearance conflicts of interest and associated biases” on the tobacco industry.

A local hockey coach is arrested on suspicion of possessing and distributing marijuana Saturday.

Eric Hamlet turned himself into authorities after allegations of possessing large amounts of weed. Police say Hamlet and his hockey team were on their way to a game in Vancouver, Washington when he stopped the bus at a Post Office in Albany. That’s when he attempted to mail a box that post office employees found suspicious.
