A CIGAR shop is aiming to bring old-fashioned high street service back to the centre of Newcastle.

The Cuban Cigar Club, which opened in Grainger Street last week, is a branch of the Carlisle-based family business which has been running for around 100 years.

A ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors goes into effect Thursday. eCigarette vendors will be fined if they’re caught selling to those 17 and under and minors will be fined if they’re caught smoking one.
The ban will be effective in the City of Spokane, Spokane Valley and unincorporated Spokane County. It came from the efforts of the Spokane Regional Heath District and local jurisdictions to protect youth from the harmful effects of nicotine. Ream more »

GPs in a city say they are seeing an increase in teenagers with health problems linked to shisha pipe smoking.

Leicester’s Primary Care Trust said it had been surprised by the numbers visiting doctors with symptoms.

Qasim Chowdary, a PCT smoking cessation adviser, said the increase in pipe use, which involves burning fruit flavoured tobacco, was among 15 to 24-year-olds.

Montana legislators have reached a proposed deal concerning medical marijuana.

The Montana Senate last week endorsed a new measure that would repeal Montana’s existing medical marijuana law and replace it with a much stricter system serving far fewer patients.
The proposed bill would cut the number of medical marijuana cardholders from nearly 30,000 to less than 3,000.

The industry has also been kind to investors over the years. The financial performance of big tobacco in the face of increasingly tough government regulations should give investors confidence — and anti-smoking advocates dismay — about the resiliency of the sector. But these gains could be masking long-term problems.
