Altria Group Inc.’s fourth quarter earnings rose 27% as margins improved and the company again reported strength at its smokeless tobacco unit.

One year after the new tobacco control law passed first reading at the Legislative Assembly (AL), the Government has sent a second draft for lawmakers to analyse. The new proposal allows casinos to set up designated smoking areas but removes the exemptions for saunas, massage lounges and dance halls initially proposed. According to the draft sent to the AL on Friday, casinos have a one-year period to create smoking areas “up to a maximum of 50 percent of the total public area, as long as they are physically separated from the remaining facilities”.

I n what’s considered the first case of its kind in Calgary, police have seized synthetic drugs designed to mimic the effects of marijuana. During raids of seven stores Tuesday, police seized 770 packets of merchandise worth an estimated $30,000.
A subsequent raid of a warehouse yielded a further 280 packages, police said.
“Up until recently, this has never been seized in the city,” said Det. Collin Harris of the Calgary police drug unit.

Ilana Chertok, associate professor of nursing at West Virginia University, has been awarded a grant to study the effectiveness of smoking cessation programs aimed at expectant mothers in Monongalia and Preston counties. The grant, provided by the March of the Dimes Foundation, will fund a program to provide pregnant women with help to quit smoking. A new study of more than 4000 US pregnant women revealed that to be mothers between the ages of 20 to 24 years are more likely to deny their smoking habit. Overall, 13 percent of pregnant and 30 percent of non-pregnant women were active cigarette smokers.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers uncovered the deception rate by measuring the blood levels of cotinine — a byproduct of nicotine used to detect exposure to tobacco smoke — in the questioned women.
