Share of household spending on alcohol, cigarettes drops

The ratio of Koreans’ spending on alcohol and cigarettes to their total spending fell to a record low in the third quarter as people grew concerned about their health, data showed Monday.

Koreans’ expenditures on alcohol and cigarettes reached 3.49 trillion won ($3.08 billion) on a seasonally adjusted basis in the July-September period, accounting for 2.35 percent of their total consumption spending, according to data by the Bank of Korea. In the cited period, total households’ expenditures stood at 148.6 trillion won. Ream more »

Health Ministry warns on cigarettes and alcohol

The increase in price of cigarettes and alcohol as directed in the 2011 budget will do little in the fight against the excessive use of the two substances says the Ministry of Health.

Spokesperson Peni Namotu says people must refrain themselves from smoking and the excessive use of alcohol.

Police search for cigarette bandit

A cigarette bandit hit a Dougherty County store early Saturday morning. The crook didn’t take much, but he caused hundreds of dollars in damage to the Fast Lane Food Mart on Sylvester Road. It’s the third reported case in the county in the last two months.

It’s also one of eight burglaries between Friday night and Saturday. Employees said the man used part of a cinder block to break in. He wrapped towels around his shoes to disguise his tracks.

Young smokers turn to loose tobacco following cigarette price hike

Following the recent hike in cigarette taxes, cheaper loose tobacco is rapidly growing in popularity among young smokers, making it difficult for the country’s main manufacturer to keep up with increasing demand.

Although cigarette prices rose by 30 to 40 percent in October, the price of a package of “Koiki,” the country’s shredded tobacco brand marketed by Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT), increased only slightly by 30 yen to 360 yen, due to a difference in tax rates between paper-wrapped cigarettes and shredded tobacco leaves.

Maine bandit cut into store to steal cigarettes

PORTLAND, Maine — Police in Portland, Maine, say someone cut a hole in the wall of a pharmacy to get inside and steal at least 10 cartons of cigarettes.

Police say the bandit went into an adjacent store that was under renovation, cut a hole in the wall and then absconded with $625 in cigarettes.

Two of India’s major cigarette makers announced Thursday they halted production across India. But cigarette smokers shouldn’t panic – at least not yet.

Cigarette makers ITC Ltd. and Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. late Thursday said they have stopped production across all their cigarette manufacturing units . The reason? They weren’t sure if they could continue using the existing packaging after a government regulation came into effect on Wednesday requiring warnings on the harmful effects of smoking to be more graphic.

East Bakersfield convenience store sells banned cigarettes

Eyewitness News investigated an east Bakersfield convenience store after a viewer called the tipline and claimed the store was selling cigarettes that are not supposed to be sold in the United States.

Eyewitness News sent an undercover crew to the Central Cali Market on East California Avenue to buy a banned pack of cigarettes, which happen to be Newports. It turns out, the market does have the real packs on display, but when the crew bought a pack the seller grabbed one from under the counter. Ream more »

Sales of cigarettes on the decline

Tobacco – Canadian manufacturers produced 1.8 billion cigarettes in October, down 7.5 per cent from September, according to Statistics Canada data released Thursday.

That downward trend continued when it came to the amount of cigarettes sold, which fell by 5.6 per cent to 1.7 billion. Closing inventories increased to 2.5 billion cigarettes, a jump of 3.7 per cent.
