The Denver City Council decided a smoking ban in public right-of-ways surrounding hospitals will stand, despite sharp criticism from neighbors and challenges with enforcement.
Two years ago, Denver became one of the first cities in the country to prohibit smoking on sidewalks, alleys and lawns surrounding hospitals.

Former LSU linebacker and former NFL player Ali Highsmith was arrested late last week, accused of possession of marijuana, a Baton Rouge police spokesman said today.

Highsmith, 25, was arrested at 10 a.m. Friday after letting narcotics detectives with the Baton Rouge Police Department and State Police search his home at 10720 Linkwood Court, Sgt. Don Kelly said.

Marijuana clinic owners and operators in the U.S. are anxious following the recent crackdown against medical marijuana dispensaries and other facilities in California, as Attorney General Eric Holder vowed that the federal government will “vigorously enforce” existing federal laws against the controversial drug. Holder expressed the Obama administration’s dislike of Proposition 19, a California measure to legalize marijuana, in a letter addressed to former federal drug enforcement heads. Ream more »

To the Utah County Board of Health, hookah pipes are the same as cigarettes and cigars. The board unanimously voted Monday to adopt a policy treating hookah pipes like any other tobacco product, fully subject to the Indoor Clean Air Act. The policy will act as a placeholder. It’s expected the state Department of Health will issue an administrative rule declaring hookah pipes subject to Utah’s indoor-smoking law.

Smoking in public places in Laramie County will be allowed to continue for now.
The Cheyenne-Laramie County Board of Health has decided not to pursue a countywide smoking ban in public places. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported Monday that board members, who are appointed, aren’t sure they have the authority to enact a ban.

There is a disturbing study out about children and drug use. More kids and teens are smoking marijuana and at younger ages. According to a study by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, from 2008 to 2009 there was a nine-percent increase to 7.3-percent of all people ages 12 and older.
