On Thursday night June 17th, 2010 a cigar that was originally released in 1896 had a resurrection as it was officially introduced to the world on the roof top of the world famous Empire Hotel in New York City. It seems that the cigar gods were on the side of William C. Paley, owner of the La Palina brand as you could not of asked for a more perfect night to enjoy cocktails, canapes, and cigars.
When I arrived at the Empire Hotel there was a line to get to the rooftop as the bar located on the pool deck is one of the hottest spots in NYC for singles but thankfully I had an invite and was able to skip the line. So once we checked in with the hostess it was off to the roof.

The war in Iraq was brought closer to home for owners of a local cigar shop when a military customer deployed there.
Chief Warrant Officer Rob Way and the owners of Cigars and Such in Ozark met while Way was stationed at Fort Rucker from April 2008 until March of this year. He lived in Ozark while he served as the Commander of the 1st Warrant Officer Company at the Warrant Officer Career College at Fort Rucker.
When Way deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the shop owners, John and Marti Varney, stayed in touch by e-mail with their cigar-smoking friend.

It is important for the Maker to understand that he has not yet kicked the habit just because he has not had a smoke for almost four weeks now. Still he can placate himself with the thought the urge is not as strong and as overwhelming as before. He must watch out for those moments when the urge kicks in like pangs of longing and then he misses tobacco as he would miss a dearly beloved lover.
The first week that he quit should not count. He smoked his last full stick of cigarette in Margie’s house in Oxnard City, California. Margie is his sister. CORONATION Street legend Liz Dawn has backed The Sentinel’s quit smoking campaign.

Liz – who played Vera Duckworth for 34 years in the long-running soap – suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and believes she would have died if she hadn’t beaten her 20-a-day habit.

She said: “I was diagnosed with lung disease about eight years ago. I thought I just had asthma, so it was a shock.

“I had been getting out of breath really quickly. It got so that if I was doing a scene on Coronation Street, I would get to the set while the scene before was being filmed. I would have to sit down straight away.

Fire investigators have determined that smoking caused a fatal fire in Wellesley on June 12.
The fire on Swathmore Road killed 81-year-old Mary Ellen Thomas, and officials believe that a lit cigarette ignited her clothing or that her clothing made contact with an electric burner while she was trying to light a cigarette, State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan and Wellesley Fire Chief Richard DeLorie said in a statement today.
Smoking is the leading cause of fire death in Massachusetts even as fire prevention technologies have improved over the years, Coan said.
Other improvements, including so-called “fire safe” cigarettes that are designed to burn themselves out, have decreased these numbers lately.

Teens can find a cigarette box with two or three cigarettes on the bus or on a street and even in a park. Cigarette boxes are everywhere.
Teens have different reasons why they smoke. Losing weight is a big reason teens smoke. Teens that smoke to lose weight are mostly girls. Lots of teens think smoking makes them look mature. A good amount of teens think rebellion is cool because they don’t feel like they are being controlled. Rebellion is not something to be proud of.

Getting high off an herbal incense. It may sound bizarre, but doctors say more kids are doing it and ending up in the hospital because of it.

Six kids in the last two weeks have showed up in the Emergency Room in Munson Medical Center in Traverse City after smoking an incense known as K2.

The product is legal, but the Grand Traverse County Health Department says it’s not safe.

Teens think they will be getting a marijuana-type high but the health department says often times that’s not the case.

You would think the leader of the world’s most powerful nation would possess the wherewithal to quit smoking, but it doesn’t necessarily work that way.

Exhibit A: Barack Obama.
During the 2008 presidential campaign, he promised wife Michelle that he would renounce tobacco for good.
But Obama had his first medical checkup as U.S. commander-in-chief in February, and the doctor’s report made it clear he was still struggling with the pernicious pleasures of nicotine. (He also had a slightly elevated cholesterol level, but was otherwise said to be in excellent health.)
