Tobacco warnings now use pictures

give_up_smoking_The Philippines on Monday joined countries that use picture-based health warnings printed on the packages of tobacco products after the release of the Department of Health (DoH) Administrative Order No. 2010-0013 mandating measures that would prohibit the promotion of tobacco use through packaging and labeling. The policy will become effective 15 days from the publication of the order and covers all tobacco products and tobacco manufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, concessionaires, and other sellers of tobacco products in the Philippines.The order aims to “provide necessary information about the health consequences, addictive nature, and mortal threat posed by tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke through measures that are scientifically proven to be effective in increasing public awareness of the health effects of tobacco use and in reducing tobacco consumption.” Read more

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III of the Liberal Party said yesterday he would no longer debate about his smoking habit with groups seeking to make him an anti-smoking poster boy.And he isn’t quitting either – at least not at this time.Aquino bared that he could finish a pack a day, and the most that he did was three packs due to tension during the snap elections in 1985.Aquino pointed out that he ran and won with the people knowing that he was a smoker. BAT is the manufacturer of a well known brand Dunhill cigarettes. They defended their own marketing strategies, but said black market traders and dodgy retailers were spoiling the industry. Youth smoking hits historic lows

The smoking rate has dropped to 4.3 percent of middle-school students and 16. 7 percent of high-school kids. Those are all-time lows, according to the organization’s annual survey. Read more

FDA Panel To Review Menthol Cigarettes, Dissolvable Tobacco Products

In mid-July, the FDA Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee will meet to discuss dissolvable tobacco products and menthol cigarettes ahead of required reports to the Secretary of Health and Human Services regarding the public health impact of these products. Tobacco industry presentations on menthol in cigarettes will include the following: the characterization of menthol, the clinical effects of menthol, the bio-markers of disease risk, industry marketing data, and the population effects of menthol cigarettes.There are menthol brands like Doina Menthol, Glamour Superslims Menthol and Esse Menthol.
