Judge strikes down NYC’s gruesome tobacco ads

The city’s campaign to scare smokers with grotesque images of decaying teeth or a diseased lung wherever tobacco products are sold was struck down Wednesday by a federal judge who concluded that only the federal government can dictate warnings that must accompany the promotion of cigarettes.
U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff handed a victory to the nation’s three largest tobacco manufacturers and the retailers who sell their products when he ruled on the legality of a 2009 city Board of Health code change requiring the display of smoking cessation signs where tobacco products are sold. Iowa’s Robinson arrested on marijuana charge

Even though Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz suspended starting running back Adam Robinson for the Insight Bowl, Ferentz expected Robinson to eventually earn back his spot with the Hawkeyes.

Getting arrested on a marijuana charge wasn’t exactly what Ferentz had in mind.

Robinson, 21, was charged with possession of marijuana Monday night in his hometown of Des Moines, putting his career at Iowa in jeopardy.

New rules force shops to hide cigarettes

Cigarettes will be hidden from sight in shops in Victoria from the New Year.
From January 1 only specialist retailers will be able to display cigarettes and tobacco products.
More than 11,000 shops will be affected by new bans.
Health Minister David Davis says smoking kills around 4,000 Victorians every year and putting cigarettes out of sight will help people quit. Ream more »

Minister of State for Public Health, Family Welfare, AYUSH and Medical Education Mahendra Hardia has taken a serious note of the news that some hookah centres are making people smoking-addicts by running their joints in the garb of coffee shops and has instructed to take stern action against them. On the instructions by the Minister of State for Health, the Health Department has send a circular to all the district collectors to form a team and conduct surprise checks on these hookah centres.

It seems that the antismoking lobby has gone a little overboard with coaxing people to give up smoking, as the government is currently planning to introduce new kits for people who would like to give up smoking. Apparently, starting from the New Year people will be provided free coupons to exchange for Quit Kits that will be used to help in people quitting the habit.
The Quit Kits will include tobacco patches for a trial of one week. The new measure has been implemented to help people pledging to give up smoking as part of their News Year resolutions. Ream more »

Just in time for New Year’s resolutions, a new poster promoting smoking as a glamorous, sexy, lifestyle choice. Showing a svelte woman in a party dress, the poster for Vogue cigarettes was distributed to provincial tobacco retailers and depicts smoking as something trendy done by beautiful people, an anti-smoking coalition said yesterday.

Call for smoking ban in all cars carrying children

A CHARITY will today call on people to pledge their support for a smoking ban in all private cars carrying children. The British Lung Foundation Wales has promised to redouble its efforts to campaign for an extension to the current smoking ban in a bid to protect children’s lungs. The campaign follows Wales’ chief medical officer Dr Tony Jewell’s support for further restrictions on smoking – he is the first CMO in the UK to call for such a ban. Ream more »
